Her boyfriend bought the ticket at a Timberville 7-Eleven and gave it to her just before the May 10 drawing. They saw the results but didn't realize what they had.
The couple took it to another store to have it scanned and were told they'd need to go to Virginia Lottery’s customer service center in Harrisonburg to find out what they'd won. That's when she learned her bank account just got a lot bigger.
Hernandez Lopez, who lives in Broadway, matched the first five numbers in the drawing —15-19-20-61-70 — but didn't get the Mega Ball number. The odds of matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in 12,607,306, according to the Virginia Lottery. She would have won $86 million if she matched all six. She was the only person in the state and only one of two nationwide to win the $1 million prize.
Hernandez Lopez told Virginia Lottery officials she has no immediate plans for the money. Hopefully get her boyfriend a nice gift for picking up the winning ticket.
She's not the only winner in this drawing however. The 7-Eleven store that sold the ticket will get a $10,000 prize, as well, lottery officials said.
